What Is The Procedure For Tooth Extractions?
We perform extractions to preserve your oral health and remove problematic teeth. If you have advanced gum disease or impacted wisdom teeth, extraction may be necessary. You can trust that we conduct extractions in our office with the highest level of care, prioritizing your safety, comfort, and convenience.
Why Would I Need a Tooth Extraction?
Extractions are usually the final option to save a tooth. Some teeth can have a detrimental effect on your oral health, so it is recommended to remove them before they cause issues such as shifting, infection, or damage in the mouth. There are several reasons why you may need or want an extraction, including:
- Wisdom teeth affected
- Badly damaged teeth
- Cracked or broken teeth beneath the gum line
- Baby teeth that are difficult to remove
- You want to avoid getting more treatment
To determine if an extraction is needed, we will conduct an examination. It is typically advised for patients requiring an extraction to undergo the procedure. Leaving a troublesome tooth in place can result in future issues like infections and abscesses. Additionally, x-rays will be taken to help accurately assess the necessity of an extraction.
What happens during a tooth extraction?
We provide the option of anesthetic or sedation based on your preference. During your consultation, we can discuss the various sedation options available. Once you are comfortable, we will proceed to loosen and extract the tooth. If needed, sutures may be placed to close the gums. To control bleeding, you will be asked to bite down on gauze. If you have been sedated, you will be taken to a recovery room until fully awake. If general sedation was used, it is important to have a friend or relative accompany you home. Lastly, we will provide you with important aftercare instructions that must be followed.
