What Are Dental Sealants?
Sealants are a type of thin, see-through coatings that can be placed on the back teeth. Their primary purpose is to shield against cavities and stubborn stains that would otherwise occur without them. An advantage of sealants is their suitability for individuals of any age, including both kids and grown-ups. Typically, sealants can endure for approximately three years before gradually wearing off on their own.
Benefits of dental sealants
Sealants offer numerous benefits for individuals with grooves, deep fissures, and pitting on their back teeth. These features often pose difficulties in maintaining good dental hygiene. Moreover, these areas are prone to stubborn stains and are more susceptible to tooth decay. Regardless of age, getting sealants can be highly advantageous for both children and adults.
Who Can Get Dental Sealants?
By conducting a thorough assessment, we can determine if sealants are appropriate for your requirements. Sealants offer numerous advantages for patients of all ages, but we especially recommend them for our younger patients who may not have fully developed proper brushing and flossing habits. If you already have older sealants, we can easily replace them at our office at your convenience. It is worth noting that sealants typically wear off within one to three years after their initial application.
What happens during the sealant procedure?
Our office offers a quick and simple sealant procedure that can be completed in just a few minutes. First, we clean and dry the back teeth thoroughly. Then, we apply a clear liquid varnish to the chewing surfaces of the teeth. This protective sealant is dried and cured using a bright light. We repeat this process for any other back teeth that need protection. It's important to note that sealants do not protect the front teeth or the spaces between the back teeth. Therefore, regular brushing and flossing are still necessary even after the sealants are applied.
