What Is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is a dental treatment used to replace one or more missing natural teeth. Unlike removable prosthetics, the bridge is firmly attached to the adjacent teeth, eliminating the need for removal and cleaning. Each bridge is custom-made to fit the patient, providing a realistic and natural appearance. Typically, fixed bridges can last for several years before requiring a full replacement.
If you have a tooth that is missing and wish to avoid undergoing surgery for a dental implant, or if you are not eligible for that particular procedure, opting for a dental bridge can serve as a viable alternative. By choosing a bridge, not only will you be able to restore the aesthetic appeal of your smile, but you will also enhance its functionality. Additionally, having a bridge in place will prevent your remaining teeth from shifting or becoming overcrowded.
Am I Eligible for a Dental Bridge?
Our dental team will assess your teeth to determine if a fixed bridge is a viable choice for you. For a precise and secure fit, the bridge will be positioned over two adjacent teeth. Please note that as the size of the bridge increases, its stability may decrease. If we find that the bridge alone may not provide sufficient stability, we may suggest using implants to support it.
What happens during the dental bridge procedure?
To begin the procedure, a local anesthetic is applied to numb a specific area of your mouth. Then, we shape and file down the surrounding teeth to make room for the new fixed bridge. Impressions are taken to create both a temporary and permanent bridge. After the first appointment, you will leave with the temporary bridge in place. At a second appointment, the temporary bridge is removed and the permanent one is securely placed using a dental-grade adhesive. We will then polish and adjust the new bridge and provide you with instructions on how to properly care for it.
